V for Vendetta is a political thriller film directed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis. The story follows an unassuming young man who takes on the mantle of "V", a superhero who fights against the totalitarian government in future England. The movie was released on October 11, 2006. On May 27, 2005, Warner Bros. announced that the Wachowski brothers were developing a film adaptation of "V for Vendetta" and that David Heyman was to produce it through his recently formed Heyday Films banner. In June 2006, Warner Bros. changed their approach and hired Warner Premiere to finance and distribute the film, though at a much lower budget than previously reported. The economic collapse in 2008 affected plans for a sequel in addition to the Wachowskis' other projects, including Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending. In December 2013, Hugo Weaving confirmed that a script for a sequel had been written back in 2006. In 2009, Warner Bros. hired the director James McTeigue and production designer Dominic Harman to direct and design a possible reboot. In 2010, they made a short film named "Vessel". In 2011, the Wachowskis were still negotiating their involvement with McTeigue's project. In September 2012 Warner Bros hired producer Joel Silver to work on V for Vendetta 2 with McTeigue, after the Wachowskis announced that they were no longer involved due to "time constraints". In January 2013, Warner Bros. hired screenwriters Brian Helgeland and Stone to write a script with McTeigue still attached as director. In May 2014, news leaked that Warner Bros was developing a prequel comic with DC Comics and noted screenwriter James Robinson was writing the comic book. In February 2015, "The Hollywood Reporter" stated David Leitch and Chad Stahelski were in talks to direct "V for Vendetta", with James McTeigue still involved as a producer, Joel Silver no longer involved, and producers Allison Shearmur and Stephen Joel Brown. The next month it was reported that John Rogers would rewrite the script by Leitch and Stahelski. In May 2015, Warner Bros. stated that Brian Helgeland was no longer involved but Fox 2000 movie production VP Emma Watts is still acting as a producer. In August 2016, Leitch and Stahelski left the film to direct "John Wick 3". In December 2016, the Wachowskis released a video saying that they will not be involved in the adaptation of "V for Vendetta" any more. In January 2017, James McTeigue told "The Hollywood Reporter" that his reboot is not connected to Warner Bros.'s prequel comic.
